Acne

At the Dermatology Center of Lake Orion, we take the patients’ concern about acne very seriously. We offer a “hands on approach” to acne with many treatments available, not just topical and/or oral medications.

Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States. It involves not only the face but can also occur on the back, chest, neck, shoulders, upper arms and buttocks.

There are many myths about acne.

Myth: You have to let acne run its course.

Truths:

  • Without treatment, dark spots and permanent scars can appear on the skin even as acne clears.

  • Many effective treatments are available.

  • Treating acne often boosts a person’s self-esteem. It is important to treat acne early to avoid possible scarring. One of the most successful treatments to help prevent this is isotretinoin. We have been prescribing isotretinoin for over 20 years for moderate to severe acne unresponsive to other treatments. www.ipledgeprogram.com/

Myth: Acne is uncommon in adults.

Truths:

  • Not just teens have acne. Many adult female women in their 30’s, 40's, 50's and beyond are getting acne, some for the first time in their lives. It is often very frustrating.

  • Acne Rosacea is another form of acne seen commonly in the mature skin with many effective treatments available. Acne rosacea commonly affects the central third of the face, especially the nose with periodic flares. Symptoms and signs include redness of the face, tiny red pimples and fine red lines (telangectasias) on the face, rhinophyma (an enlarged, red, bumpy or bulbous nose), and even eye problems, such as swollen, red eyelids, conjunctivitis, and rosacea keratitis.
